What to expect during your eye exam:
Your eye exam will involve a series of tests designed to evaluate your vision and check for eye diseases. Each test during an eye exam evaluates a different aspect of your vision and your doctor will use different types of instruments to check all the areas of your eyes.
The exam will usually begin with your doctor or technician asking about your medical history, and if you are having any vision problems. Your eye doctor will check your eyes using a light to ensure the exterior parts of your eyes are healthy. We measure your visual acuity, assess your need for glasses and examine your eyes for signs of disease.
Children must not be forgotten and should have a comprehensive eye examination performed between the ages of 4 and 6 years of age. Before that, it is crucial children have their vision checked by their pediatrician at regular intervals. Most importantly, if you suspect any problems with your child’s vision, schedule an appointment with your eye doctor right away. Our Optometrist at Fifth Avenue EyeCare & Rosenthal Eye Surgery has specialty training in pediatric vision care.
What to expect?
Dilation
Drops may be placed in your eyes to dilate, or widen, the pupils. Your doctor uses a magnifying lens to examine the eyes. Your vision may remain blurred for some time after the drops are placed. It is suggested to bring a driver with you, if necessary, to your exam. We also offer a non-dilated option. We offer wide field photography which may satisfy the need for a fundus or retinal exam. There may be an additional charge for this option.
Slit-lamp exam
The slit-lamp examination looks at structures that are at the front of the eye.
Color vision test
A color vision test may be used to check your ability to distinguish between different colors.
Tonometry
Tonometry is a test to measure the pressure inside your eyes. This test is used to screen for and manage glaucoma.
Visual field test
This test measures your side (peripheral) vision. It helps our doctors find out if you have lost side vision.
Refraction test
The refraction test is an eye exam that measures a person’s prescription for eyeglasses or contact lenses.
At Fifth Avenue EyeCare & Rosenthal Eye Surgery, we recommend that you have a comprehensive eye examination every one to three years. Periodic eye and vision examinations are an important part of preventive health care. Various eye and medical problems can be found by a routine eye test, including glaucoma, cataracts, high blood pressure, macular degeneration, and diabetes. People with diabetes should have their eyes examined at least once a year.
